THIS ISN'T LIVING

                                              Negro Ink  E. L. PLEASANT

THIS ISN’T LIVING

Welcome to another web edition of THINKING OUT LOUD, and I'm your host, E. L. Pleasant. Thinking Out Loud, Though they all have one to tell, their story is no different than yours, because it’s the one time that it doesn’t matter if your name is Young Buck, T.I., or 2Pac, for the requirement has already been established at birth if you are blessed to be born black.  Out of every house hold there are at lease one or more family member that are in jail or will be before the year is out because of an unpaid traffic ticket(s.)  They have been unlawfully stopping blacks since 1940 and it wasn’t called racial profiling until around 1980, when in fact you and I know it has never been racial profiling, but a hate crime being committed by those that sworn to uphold the law.  The same people that make the laws are the one’s that breaks them at will, because they are above the law or at least over you and I.  So let’s start calling it what it is and that is, HATE CRIMES.  We joke about it in our songs like, “Driving Dirty,” too in our movies, like “National Security,” and saying, “Driving While Black, to keep from dealing with the reality of what is happing every single day when we venture out from our homes.  It is the same message that the whites have been sending since we stepped off of their ships, and that is, they are going to tame/break us one way or the other, meaning physically or mentally any means necessary.  Think about it, every time you get behind the wheel you fear being stopped, you do thirty five when the speed limit is forty five and you panic when ever the police get behind you because you know he’s running your plates.  So you run like a slave or if you had a weapon you would kill them is the only thing that comes to your mind after being stopped more times because of your color than your driving record.  This is what they want you to fear every time you get behind the wheel or venture outside of your homes when you see them coming that they still have control over you.  Their motivation is the same as their grandparents, hate past down from generation to generation that will not be broken.  You have seen their dreams come true, for they own every thing worth having and only a few successful blacks have seen theirs come to light, but they refuse to remember where they came from out of fear also.  Because if they acknowledge who they are and proud to be what they could not break or be bought would be a indication that they forgotten their place, therefore they fear more than anything of being treated or thought of as being one of us.  So they do what they call beating them at their own game when the whites are the ones controlling the dices.

So officers like Beekman will sit on a deserted parking lot with only one thing on his mind and that is to arrest and get as many niggers off the street and into a cage as possible because that is where we belong.  Nine out of ten he knows that what be an issue because for every tenth car that he stop will be the only one to get away. For every one of the remaining nine people is going to have something wrong with them, from suspended license, revoked, unregistered car, expired plates, no insurance too traffic warrants already being issued years ago.  Yet he had no reason(s) to stop you other than his motivation and that is hate, which he call doing his job and you can see that every time that you had to appear in court and seen one hundred blacks like the million man march and less than a dozen of whites.  Think about this also.  All the money that is being raised out of you having to sell blood to pay for these tickets, where to you think the money is going?

Dontay Hogan is the shit to those that know him well. He drives two hours back and forth to Mexico Missouri for 15.80 every morning unloading trucks and in between time locked- up in some county jail. A month in the city work house, two weeks in another facility too 72 hours in Florissant, Jennings, Delwood, Hazelwood, Molean Acres and so forth, you get the ideal, he's a lifer and this is what life mean to him. He sits up from his laid back position to spit his tail for now he has a captivating audience of one, which is me to listen and decide for myself which is bull and the hold truth. "I wear nothing but Polo and matching hats, when my girl and I moved in together and she saw my shit, she was like damn you must think you're the shit." I must admit I couldn't control my smile, because I could see that he thought so as well, and he couldn't wait to continue telling me about his life as a rose that sprung up from the concrete, with many broken dreams or misguided hopes in all. How he flipped cars by buying them for 150 to 300 hundred and selling them for1500 hundred, leaving him holding 20 thousand at onetime that most of his peers would never see or hold in their hands to be able to hold the same bragging rights like him. His hustling has taught him one thing and that is how to survive rather it selling drugs, stolen items or what ever to get paid. He had a white lawyer on retainer but he had to fair her because she wasn't about handling business and just to think he was planning on making her their family lawyer, so he said.  "Once I was over my cousin, right, my ex called me and asked where I was at cause she wanted to go out, like I gave a fuck where she was going and she wanted me to keep my son. So I tell her to bring him, shit, that’ll be cool little man can hang with me. The next thing I know I'm standing there on the porch with my cousin talking when the police rolls up, get out, and asked me what my name were, I say Dontay. Then he asked me what my last name were, and I asked him what he wanted to know my name for. He said he had a warrant for my arrest. That crazy bitch told them that I jumped on her. My cousin told them that I been there all evening because my girlfriend had my car, so there was no way that I could have done what she said, I tell them that she called me saying she was bringing my son over to me. Those mother fuckers arrested me any way because they said I had a traffic warrant, that, that white bitch was suppose to have taken care of. So when I get there I call my girl and tell her where I am and she says, stop lying, I say for real girl and come and get me out." He's smiling as if he has been holding this shit in waiting for someone to come alone so he could relieve himself. "He tells her to life up the arm rest as he could hear her scream damn, and he is telling her to be quite. Then he tells her to take the key and open the glove box, and she screams again, saying damn you must think you're the shit, I been driving around all this time with all this money up in here. That's what I do, because we were supposed to go out that night."

Every one of the twenty or more awaiting inmates had a story to tell how they ended up here with only one or two variations that still came down to the same conclusion, just another hate crime being committed by those sworn to uphold the law.

Joey Bittle resides two cells down from Hogan, one of two white cell mates that will be spending the night, though he had been feverishly trying every ten minutes or so to get his mother to bail him out by making hollow promises that he will pay her back no matter what ever it takes. You can tell by his eyes he doesn’t want to be around no Negro any longer than he can hold his breath, for there are only two of them here tonight. The guy that is sharing a cell with him is a mixed therefore he's not white though he surely could past for one with his shoulder length blondish hair, his conversation tells us he have accepted the term nigga as he spend his tell fucking some white bitch as he described her. His words not mine. He was at some red neck bar as the story goes and he took her out back, fucked her and left her where she bent over. He's been drinking cranberry and goose all evening so he said. When he got ready to reenter this fine establishment some big red neck motherfucker stepped to him asking the where about of that white bitch, and “I asked him what business was it to him, he said some shit and I stole him. When I woke up I was in jail with a broken nose twisted to one side like Owin Wilson. Man I Never got my black ass beating by some white boys in my life.” Joey is sitting across from this one gentlemen who name I failed to catch as he rest his head against the bars laughing. But Joey isn't laughing and there's contempt in his eyes. Maybe it's because he didn't like the idea of him talking about being with a white woman or the fact he can past for white but he's black. He springs from his metal bunk and grasp the phone once more. "Mom please, I swear I'll pay you back, are you listening to me? I didn't start the fight with Cory, he started hitting me, shit, are you fucking crazy? No, I'm saying you act like you're not hearing a word I'm saying, mom I didn't go over there to fight Cory, you can ask Brian." His call is disconnected for the third or forth time, in which he had cursed her out repeatedly asking her for help. Another guy on my left chimes in on a beat. "We always want to blame the white man for the situation that we are in, when we are the one's that didn't pay that ticket." Every voice fell silent to these unsolicited comments nor did anyone care to debate with this individual, not even I with my intellect. Unable to stand a second longer the phone is once again in the 24year old Joey Bittles hands, not to apologize, but demand to be set free by his mother. Now swearing to get her money back to her, his mother, this went from three days to now two in the time he said it would take, for desperation calls for any means nessacere. He will walk home if she just come and pay his two hundred dollar bail in between a few more curse words. Pleading how he want to spend the holiday with his son. "No mom, why you keep trying to make me out to be a bad person, I 'm the one with the bruises and he called the police on me. Then call Brain mom and ask him for me to come and post bail for me. The phone goes silent as I'm ask to vacate the premises while ever eye in now on me and the President. “Still Asking What’s The Meaning of Life?” from the streets I give you “PAHZAZZ” for THINKING OUT LOUD, I’m E. L. PLEASANT

GIVE US 2PAC

                                                          GERMANY

On November 18, 1993, Tupac "2Pac" Shakur was arrested for sexually abusing a 19-year-old woman, who he met in a New York nightclub, and allegedly sodomized and sexually abused with three of his friends. In 1995, he was sentenced to prison for up to four and a half years, but received an early release after a few months. In September 1996, the 25-year-old Shakur was shot four times in the chest and died from the wounds.
Previous Arrests·
1992 - Tupac was arrested after being involved in an altercation in which a stray bullet killed a child, but the charges were later dismissed.
·  April 5, 1993 - Tupac spent 10 days in a Michigan prison for beating another rapper with a baseball bat.
·  October 31, 1993 - Tupac allegedly stopped to help a black motorist who he felt was being harassed by the policemen. A fight broke out and Tupac shot one policemen in the leg and the other in the buttocks. When it was determined that the policemen were intoxicated and carrying guns taken from the police evidence room, the charges were dropped.
·  November 18, 1993 - Shakur was arrested on the sexual abuse and sodomy charges and weapons charges in New York City. The sodomy and weapons charges were dropped.
·  November 10, 1994 - Tupac, slated to star in the movie Meance II, punched the director Allen Hughes. He spent 15 days in prison and was replaced in the movie by Larenz Tate.
·  November 30, 1994, Tupac Shakur was ambushed by three black men in the lobby of a recording studio in Times Square in New York City. The men robbed him of over $35,000 in cash and jewelry and shot him five times - hitting his head, groin and hand.
·  On September 7, 1996 in Las Vegas, Nevada, Shakur attended the Mike Tyson and Bruce Seldon boxing match. Allegedly after the match, Shakur was involved in a fight in the lobby of the MGM Hotel. Later that evening he was shot in his car in a drive-by shooting. He suffered four gun shot wounds and died in the University of Nevada Hospital six days later. Although there was much speculation about the murder being stimulated by an ongoing rivalry between gangs associated with east and west coast rap recording companies, the murder was never officially solved

                                                             STILL I RISE
Still I Rise lyrics
Dear Lord
As we down here, struggle for as long as we know
In search of a paradise to touch (my ni**a Johnny J)
Dreams are dreams, and reality seems to be the only place to go
The only place for us
I know, try to make the best of bad situations
Seems to be my life's story
Ain't no glory in pain, a soldier's story in vain
And can't nobody live this life for me
It's a ride y'all, a long hard ride

Welcome to another web edition of THINKING OUT LOUD, and I'm your host, E. L. Pleasant. Thinking Out Loud, Four years have come and gone and we are still singing the same song that is not worth the breath it is sung in, for we have not over come. The words that I chose the use are not complicated that causes you to have to turn to your Oxford Dictionary ever half page to figure out what this Negro is talking about?  Just look around and I know you see the same things even the blind feel in the black communities.  There are three things that the whites will not put stock in when blacks are concern.  You can have your churches if that will keep you out of ours; you can have your hair salons because we don’t want to touch you unless we are hauling your ass off to jail, and some place to stump your feet and become the fools that you are.  Other than that, they will fight you every step of the way with red tape and zoning laws.  Some of us loved listening to 2pac because regardless of his life style, he was a true poet that was trying to give more than he ever took away from here.   His message for those that didn’t want to listen or were unable to comprehend was a simple one.  Come together as brothers and sisters and love one another, a place where we can call ours.  Don’t have to pretend no more just to get through the day, no police harassing us cause of our color or mean mugging cause we riding four deep just chilling and enjoying life.  That was his dream, totally different from Martin’s.  Since slavery and a thousand marches we still don’t have anything of our own.

The rose that grew from concrete Tupac Amar Shakur

"Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete, proving nature's laws wrong it learned to walk without having feet."

On the contrary, where ever there is a will to live, something will always grow out of nothing, even when you think there is nothing there. The wind blows dirt into the gutters and plants start to grow in a self made bed. You build a house on top of dirt don't mean just because there is no sunlight what was once there will cease to exist, it simply will adapt and evolve into something else. As blacks, that is what we have always done, for God said, "We shall not parish." Yet will still can't come together as a race and my preaching about it only confirms that I stand alone.  For THINKING OUT LOUD, I'm E. L. PLEASANT

WILL SMITH BEEN OUT!

                                   WILLORD CHRISTOPHER "WILL" SMITH, JR

Rumors of an impending divorce between Will and Jada are rampant, and a new report suggests another man has come between them. Find out all of the details! Will Smith, 43, and Jada Pinkett Smith, 40, have been long known as a grounded Hollywood couple, so when word spread that there was trouble between the A-listers, everyone began speculating what could’ve gone wrong. Answer: Will’s “bromance” with actor Duane Martin, suggests Star.

Apparently they’ve heard the rumors in
Russia! A frisky, well-dressed, good-looking Ukrainian reporter/prankster named Vitalii Sediuk on a press line in Moscow at the opening of Men in Black 3 (see trailer below) hugged then kissed Smith on the lips. Visibly in a GAY PANIC, Smith kinda bitch-slapped him in return. But rrreal softly, yelling out, “Hey man, what the HELL is your problem?” Then the fired up/freaked out superstar added, to no one in particular, “He’s lucky I didn’t sucker punch him!”
We all know Jada would have. And Vitalii would have loved it.
Anyway, if the rumors are true, things may not be going well for Will Smith and his missus. Which apparently the young Russian correspondent had heard and perhaps he wanted to console Smith later on in his room…or something? Sweet thought, but Smith’s probably not using red carpets to play kissy face and line up a few new dates. If he’s learned anything from his fellow Scientologist Travolta, hotel spas are off limits, too.
Willard Christopher "Will" Smith, Jr. (born September 25, 1968) is an American actor, producer, and rapper. He has enjoyed success in television, film and music. In April 2007, Newsweek called him the most powerful actor in Hollywood. Smith has been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards, two Academy Awards, and has won four Grammy Awards.

In the late 1980s, Smith achieved modest fame as a rapper under the name The Fresh Prince. In 1990, his popularity increased dramatically when he starred in the popular television series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The show ran for nearly six years (1990–1996) on NBC and has been syndicated consistently on various networks since then. In the mid-1990s, Smith moved from television to film, and ultimately starred in numerous blockbuster films. He is the only actor to have eight consecutive films gross over $100 million in the domestic box office and the only one to have eight consecutive films in which he starred open at #1 spot in the domestic box office tally.
Fourteen of the nineteen fiction films he has acted in have accumulated worldwide gross earnings of over $100 million, and four took in over $500 million in global box office receipts. As of 2011, his films have grossed $5.7 billion in global box office. He received a Best Actor Oscar nomination for Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness
Personal Life
Smith credits his father's dedication to his own involvement in the lives of his children. Smith married Sheree Zampino in 1992. They had a son, Willard Christopher Smith III, also known as "Trey", but divorced in 1995. Trey appeared in his father's music video for the 1998 single "Just the Two of Us".

Smith married actress Jada Pinkett in 1997. Together they have had two children: Jaden Christopher Syre (born 1998), his co-star in The Pursuit of Happyness, and Willow Camille Reign (born 2000), who appeared as his daughter in I Am Legend. Along with his brother, Harry Smith, he owns Treyball Development Inc., a Beverly Hills-based company named after his first son. Smith and his family reside on Star Island in Miami Beach, Florida, Los Angeles, Stockholm, Sweden and Philadelphia.

Smith was consistently listed in Fortune Magazine's "Richest 40" list of the forty wealthiest Americans under the age of 40. He donated $4,600 to the presidential campaign of Democrat Barack Obama. On December 11, 2009, Smith and his wife hosted the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, Norway - to celebrate Obama's winning of the prize.

Smith has said he has studied multiple religions, including Scientology, and he has said many complimentary things about Scientology and other faiths. Despite his praise of Scientology, Smith said "I just think a lot of the ideas in Scientology are brilliant and revolutionary and non-religious" and "Ninety-eight percent of the principles in Scientology are identical to the principles of the Bible.... I don't think that because the word someone uses for spirit is 'thetan' that the definition becomes any different." He has denied having joined the Church of Scientology, saying "I am a Christian. I am a student of all religions, and I respect all people and all paths."

Smith gave $1.3 million to charities in 2007, of which $450,000 went to two Christian ministries, and $122,500 went to three Scientology organizations; the remaining beneficiaries included "a Los Angeles mosque, other Christian-based schools and churches, and [...] the Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Center in Israel". Smith and his wife have also founded a private elementary school in Calabasas, California, the New Village Leadership Academy, which uses Study Technology, a teaching methodology developed by L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. Federal tax filing showed that Will Smith donated $1.2 million to the school in 2010.

In 2012, he expressed support for the legalizing of same-sex marriage, in an endorsement of president Barack Obama's declaration to adopt this stance on the issue

                                                           2011 WILL SMITH

Welcome to another web edition of THINKING OUT LOUD, and I'm your host, E. L. Pleasant. Thinking Out Loud, can't you just see the fruit rolled up inside of him?  I could long before the "Six Degrees of Seperation.  He gave us a hit in Fresh Prince if you cared to notice, therefore I say, Will Smith been out.

If you look close enough Federer look guy as well, but then most white male do, if not act like they are when they speak.  Today means nothing just because they are married.  A smile says so much.

How many times have Serena Williams won or Tiger Woods that he came out to offer his support
for their accomplishments, but one smell of a white person ass is all it takes, pretty much in the same way that dogs go around sniffing other dog’s butts and can’t seem to get enough of it.  We don’t promote our own unless we are trying to tire them down by comparing them to someone else or criticizing them.  If any of this sounds familiar then you are one of the lucky ones with a sinus problem and know shit when you smell it.  This guy here didn't even know Will Smith nor wanted his gift and probably had no intention to see Men In Black.  So where are our heroes that our young blacks can look up too and admire, well  they are to busy surrounded by the white kids while the black ones buy their shoes and cd's to help put them where they are. For THINKING OUT LOUD, I'm E. L. PLEASANT

JEREMY SCOTT AND ALL THE OTHER FOOLS

                                              Negro Ink    E. L. PLEASANT

                                             JEREMY SCOTT
BLACKS ONLY

Los Angeles-based designer Jeremy Scott is trying to weather the controversy over his collaboration with Adidas. The JS Roundhouse Mids, which were supposed to be released in August, feature ankle shackles, which sparked some talk that the sneakers were racist and recalled slavery. Today, Adidas cancelled the shoes, even though the company had denied any connection to slavery earlier.

In a statement yesterday, Adidas said, "The design of the JS Roundhouse Mid is nothing more than the designer Jeremy Scott’s outrageous and unique take on fashion and has nothing to do with slavery. Jeremy Scott is renowned as a designer whose style is quirky and lighthearted and his previous shoe designs for adidas Originals have, for example, included panda heads and Mickey Mouse. Any suggestion that this is linked to slavery is untruthful." Today, Adidas basically said the same thing, but added, "We apologize if people are offended by the design and we are withdrawing our plans to make them available in the marketplace."

Scott has been trying to explain his inspiration:

“MY WORK HAS ALWAYS BEEN INSPIRED BY CARTOONS, TOYS & MY CHILDHOOD… Yes, the shoe is apparently a reference to My Pet Monster, a '90s toy.”

But the Rev. Jesse Jackson is having none of that. In a column on the Huffington Post, Jackson wrote:

The attempt to commercialize and make popular more than 200 years of human degradation, where blacks were considered three-fifths human by our Constitution is offensive, appalling and insensitive. Removing the chains from our ankles and placing them on our shoes is no progress

For Adidas to promote the athleticism and contributions of a variety of African-American sports legends -- especially Olympic heroes Wilma Rudolph and Jesse Owens and boxing great Muhammad Ali -- and then allow such a degrading symbol of African-American history to pass through its corporate channels and move toward actual production and advertisement, is insensitive and corporately irresponsible.

These slave shoes are odious and we as a people should be called to resent and resist them. If put into production and placed on the market, protests and pickets signs will follow. Adidas cannot make a profit at the expense of commercialized human degradation.

Adidas told the Daily News, "Since the shoe debuted on our Facebook page ahead of its market release in August, adidas has received both favorable and critical feedback."

The shoes would have cost $350. For four times that, you can get a Kanye West-designed Nike Air Yeezy 2 on eBay.

Sometimes there is no excuse for ignorance, especially when you believe that you are superior.  Yet they come up with the same recycled lines, of what their intentions suppose to have expressed.  Their unique or bold fashion statement or what ever the case may be at the time while they reveal their stupidity.  This is a grown ass man of some sort that claimed to have patterned his shoes after some toy, where as he and his toys need to remain in the closet.  Then for Adidas to come to his defense, which I would not have expected less because they are just as much the blame as the great Jeremy Scott, for they gave him the green light.  Then to foolishly say, “He made other shoes with Mickey Mouse and no one was offended.”  We are always the butt of their jokes, not the females but the men.  In their movies we’re never the educated person or the intelligent one, but always the comic relief in fiction and reality.  We didn’t end up in slavery because of their intelligent but God’s will.  For the first shall be last and the last shall be first, therefore we were once first and we shall be again, because the Bible said so.  It is time to wake up, stand up and speak up.  A school in Rochester put on black face last year for home coming, portraying Bobby Brown’s alcoholism and Whitney’s drug addiction and no one found it disrespectful enough to speak up.  This year they decided to do it again in black face.  This time portraying Chris Brown beating Rihanna, before someone spoke up, and the first things to come out of their mouths were” They wasn’t trying to offended anyone, no one complained last year.  Wow!  The same things take place in the work place as well when it comes time for promotion and you are over looked or not thought of.  Then they say, “They didn’t think you were interested or all of a sudden you just don’t have the qualifications after you have trained half of the people they seem to keep promoting.

Victoria’s Secret apologizes last week after use of Native American headdress in fashion show draws outrage.  The Company responded to the complaints over the weekend by saying it was sorry to have upset anyone and that it wouldn’t include the outfit in the show’s television broadcast next month, or in any marketing materials.

“We sincerely apologize as we absolutely had no intention to offend anyone,” the company said

THIS IS WHAT THE WHITE PEOPLE SAID:  Thousand of people have commented about the outfit on the company’s Facebook page.  Some praised Kloss’ attire as artistic and urged those offended by it to “get over it.”

THE NATIVE AMERICAN’S:  “We have gone through the atrocities to survive and ensure our way of life continues,” Navajo Nations spokesman Ermy Zah said in an interview Monday.  “Any mockery, whether it’s Halloween, Victoria’s Secret – they are spitting on us.  They are spitting on our culture, and it’s upsetting.”

HISTORICALLY, headdresses are a symbol of respect, worn by Native American war chiefs and warriors.  For Great Plains tribes, for instance, each feather placed on a headdress has significance and had to be earned through an act of compassion or bravery.

It is easy for the white people to be ignorant about another race feelings, for not one have yet to have their homes entered into, and found their mothers, daughters, wives raped, then butchered or sold in the middle of the night, to have to live within the past and future memories there of.

You have never seen a Native American male or female disgrace themselves in public or on
Televisions shaking their ass or two women kissing have you?  I guess it is too late for us
to talk about becoming a proud race once more.  For THINKING OUT LOUD, I’m

BEIJING — In a gruesome act of resistance that has played out dozens of times in recent months, six young Tibetans set fire to themselves this week, shouting demands for freedom as they were consumed by flames. On Friday, for the second day in a row, thousands of Tibetan students took to the streets in the northwestern Chinese province of Qinghai denouncing “cultural genocide” and demanding an end to heavy-handed police tactics, exile groups said.

Tibetans protested in the Rongwo township in the northwestern province of Qinghai Friday. Apparently timed to send a signal to the Communist Party elite, demonstrators decried “cultural genocide” and demanded an end to heavy-handed police tactics.
Here in the nation’s capital, where Communist Party power brokers are presenting a new generation of leaders, the outgoing president, Hu Jintao, made no mention on Thursday of the anger consuming China’s discontented borderlands during his sprawling address to the nation.

Asked by foreign reporters about the escalating crisis, delegates to the 18th Party Congress blamed the Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader, or inelegantly dodged the question altogether. “Can I not answer that?” one asked nervously.

But while Tibetan rights advocates have long been inured to impassive officials, they are increasingly troubled by the deafening silence among Chinese intellectuals and the liberal online commentariat, a group usually eager to call out injustice despite the perils of bucking China’s authoritarian strictures.

On Twitter, where China’s most voluble critics find refuge from government censors, the topic is often buried by posts about persecuted dissidents, corrupt officials, illegal land grabs or other scandals of the day. Since the self-immolations began in earnest last year, few Chinese scholars have attempted to grapple with the subject.

“The apathy is appalling,” said Zhang Boshu, a political philosopher who lost his job at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences three years ago for criticizing the government’s human rights record.

With a mounting toll of 69 self-immolations, at least 56 of them fatal, many Tibetans are asking themselves why their Han Chinese brethren seem unmoved by the suffering — or are at least uninterested in exploring why so many people have embraced such a horrifying means of protest.

The silence, some say, is exposing an uncomfortable gulf between Tibetans and China’s Han majority, despite decades of propaganda that seeks to portray the nation as a harmonious family comprising 56 contented minorities.

“It’s the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about,” said Wang Lixiong, a prominent Tibetologist and social theorist whose writings have drawn the unwelcome attention of public security personnel, including a contingent of police officers who kept him sequestered inside his Beijing apartment this week as the party congress got under way.

Mr. Wang and others say a subtle undercurrent of antipathy toward Tibetans suffuses the worldview of educated Chinese. That sentiment, they say, has been nurtured by official propaganda that paints Tibetans as rebellious, uncultured and unappreciative of government efforts to raise their standard of living.

One prominent filmmaker, speaking more candidly than usual, but only under the condition of anonymity, noted that many Chinese are alternately fascinated and repulsed by Tibetans. “We Han love their exotic singing and dancing, but we also see them as barbarians seeking to split the nation apart,” he said.

Whether it be antipathy or apathy, many Chinese have been unconsciously swayed by government propaganda that describes the self-immolators as “terrorists” even as unrelenting censorship blocks any public airing of their grievances, which include complaints about restrictions on Tibetan Buddhism and educational policies that, in some areas, favor Mandarin over Tibetan.

“I think the authorities have deliberately created a barrier between the two cultures,” said Hu Yong, a professor at Peking University’s School of Journalism and Communication.

Mr. Hu said such attitudes were reinforced by China’s army of Tibet specialists, nearly all of whom are employed by government-affiliated institutions and who faithfully

Many Chinese Intellectuals Are Silent Amid a Wave of Tibetan Self-Immolations

Rigorous censorship has ensured that news about the protests rarely makes it onto the Internet, let alone into the mainstream news media. The Chinese media has reported only a handful of the self-immolations, and people who transmit news from Tibetan areas face harsh punishment.

The fear can be paralyzing for many Chinese intellectuals. “No one wants to be accused of being a separatist,” said Mr. Zhang, the former academy member.

But neither fear nor censorship fully explain the silence of Chinese liberals, most of whom are adept at skirting the great firewall and many of whom regularly step across imaginary red lines to lob verbal critiques of the Communist Party. Tsering Woeser, a blogger of mixed Tibetan and Han ancestry, said many Chinese see Tibetans as the “other”; she said even friends have been known to cite a well-known Chinese proverb to explain their indifference to Tibetan grievances: “If you are not of my ethnicity, you cannot share my heart.”

Ms. Woeser said that even her most open-minded friends are confounded by Tibetans, with their fierce religious devotion, their demands for greater autonomy and their aching for the return of the Dalai Lama, whom Beijing regularly dismisses as a “wolf in sheep’s clothing.”

Chinese intellectuals, she added, see Tibet as a forbidding, restive land, but also inseparable from China. “The Han are obsessed with issues of sovereignty,” said Ms. Woeser, who is married to Mr. Wang, the critic barred from leaving his home. “They want to claim Tibet as part of China, but they are not terribly concerned with the Tibetan people or their culture.”

Even if the self-immolations are confined to a region thousands of miles away, Beijing officials were taking no chances this week as party elders gathered for the once-a-decade change in leadership. During the opening day of the party congress on Thursday, several security guards inside the Great Hall of the People held fire extinguishers between their knees as they sat in the back row of the auditorium.

Outside on Tiananmen Square, firefighters stood at attention with fire extinguishers at their feet, even if the vast granite-clad plaza was devoid of anything flammable. A New York Times photographer who snapped pictures of the firefighters was confronted by the police, who forced her to delete the images.

At a session held on Friday by delegates from the Tibet Autonomous Region, Liang Tiangeng, a top party official, dismissed a foreign reporter’s question about whether the government had plans to address the self-immolations. After extolling the happiness of the Tibetan people, he noted that even developed and democratic nations were plagued by suicides.

“People kill themselves, they set fire to themselves, they shoot themselves every day,” he said. “I think some media organizations are trying to sensationalize the very few cases of self-immolation that have happened in Tibetan area because they have ulterior motives.”

Welcome to another web edition of THINKING OUT LOUD, and I'm your host, E. L. Pleasant. Thinking Out Loud, did we not ask the Lord for a sign and he said none will be given except that, which had already been given?  He also said that they have eyes and see not, and they have ears and yet they hear not. Therefore what was spoken then is what was written and it too have gone unseen and unfelt to bring about a change in many of us.

These are the signs we have taken for granted as time is surly running out for those who have not the eyes or ears to comprehend what have been foretold, but heed by words that there are only one way out of this world and only one answer for all of your questions.  Many will seek cremation in a futile attempt to escape God’s wrath, but he said every eye shall see him, so let your dust blow into the wind, only to have it returned unto the sender, what is called blow back.  For THINKING OUT LOUD, I’m E. L. PLEASANT
