'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' Highlights Trayvon Martin Case For Upcoming Episode

Through the years, the “Law & Order” franchise has based certain episodes on various current events. Earlier this year the television drama aired an episode inspired by Rihanna and Chris Brown's highly-publicized 2009 domestic dispute, and now it appears that the show has chosen another controversial news story to highlight.

According to the New York Daily News, actress Cybil Shepard was spotted in New York City on Tuesday filming an upcoming episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” inspired by the Trayvon Martin case.

In the scene, as Shepherd and her legal team try to leave the court, they’re swarmed by a gaggle of reporters and confronted with angry people waving signs similar to the ones seen at dozens of rallies held in honor of Martin over the last year.
The teen’s untimely death in February 2012 sparked national outcry, and various organizations have responded with rallies, magazine covers, and ads in honor of Martin. Most recently the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence released an online video ad, reenacting the night Travyon Martin was killed in an effort to stop "Stand Your Ground" laws nationwide.

In an effort to send a message of hope to families who've lost loved ones due to "senseless gun violence", Trayvon Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, collaborated with gospel artist T

Since the Zimmerman trial ended, Trayvon Martin's parents have remained vocal in the media about repealing Stand Your Ground laws and earlier this week Fulton took a stand against New York's stop-and-frisk policy.

While Fulton doesn't appear on the track singing or rapping, she does provide messages of encouragement on the introduction and outro of the song.

She ends the song with this heartfelt message:
"No matter what you do, always know God is in control. You must always stay encouraged and hold your head high. I am glad to know that my angel Trayvon is watching over me and a peace of my heart is in heaven.”
She debuted the song Tuesday on South Florida radio station Hot 105. T-D.O.G.G. was inspired to create the song after watching Trayvon's mother on a number of media interviews following the death of her son and noticed the "sadness" in her face.

"I went back and watched her segments on TV and said 'I'm going to step outside of myself and see what she would be feeling,'" T-D.O.G.G said.

'The Wire' Creator David Simon on Trayvon Martin Case: 'Ashamed' to Be an American

 

David Simon (John W. Ferguson/Getty Images)The not-guilty verdict for George Zimmerman in the death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin has outraged many people across the country, including "The Wire" creator David Simon.

In an emotional, fiery post on his blog, The Audacity of Despair, Simon denounced the verdict, saying he was "ashamed to call himself an American."

Simon knows a little something about race. He worked for 12 years as a crime reporter in Baltimore, witnessing firsthand the despair referenced in his blog title. He then channeled that knowledge to write nuanced, complex portrayals of race, drugs, poverty, violence, and corruption on series like "Homicide: Life on the Street," "The Corner," and "The Wire."

From 2002-2005 on "The Wire," Simon and his team of writers depicted the often deadly consequences for young black men living within the broken education, political, and justice systems. The series was lauded as an American storytelling masterpiece, inspired professors to teach about it in college classes, and was recently named the No. 1 series of all time by Entertainment Weekly.

Outside of his television writing, Simon often comments on social issues, and the Martin case stirred up particularly forceful feelings in him. Here's the entirety of his post:

You can stand your ground if you're white, and you can use a gun to do it. But if you stand your ground with your fists and you're black, you're dead.

In the state of Florida, the season on African-Americans now runs year round. Come one, come all. And bring a handgun. The legislators are fine with this blood on their hands. The governor, too. One man accosted another and when it became a fist fight, one man — and one man only — had a firearm. The rest is racial rationalization and dishonorable commentary.

If I were a person of color in Florida, I would pick up a brick and start walking toward that courthouse in Sanford. Those that do not, those that hold the pain and betrayal inside and somehow manage to resist violence — these citizens are testament to a stoic tolerance that is more than the rest of us deserve. I confess, their patience and patriotism is well beyond my own.

Behold, the lewd, pornographic embrace of two great American pathologies: Race and guns, both of which have conspired not only to take the life of a teenager, but to make that killing entirely permissible. I can't look an African-American parent in the eye for thinking about what they must tell their sons about what can happen to them on the streets of their country. Tonight, anyone who truly understands what justice is and what it requires of a society is ashamed to call himself an American."

Strong words. But Simon didn't stop there. Remarkably, he took the time to address many of the comments following the post. A few highlights:

• One commenter chastised him for trying to "fan the flames and incite violence," to which Simon replied, "You've missed the thread of that passage utterly."
• Several others called on Simon to prove that Zimmerman's actions in shooting Martin were racist. He replied, "I don't think Mr. Zimmerman is by any necessity a racist. But his calculations and his behaviors were racially motivated."
• In other responses, Simon bemoaned the slippery slope effect — that the Martin case would be the first of many. "The law has changed — and the culture of legal self-defense is changing — in a revolutionary fashion. There will be more of these cases now. Not less."

Is it strange, funny or just simply sad when you hear black people quick to boast that they are proud to be an American when we as a race never been treated as such nor received the liberties there of, then to hear a member of the white race, our oppressors denounce what he has had the privilege of being to this point because of us, is now ashamed to be an American because of the continue injustice to our race?  The reason that these blacks are proud is because they don't know any better and here is all they have ever know, which is also why they are quick tell those of us that is not afraid to speak up and out about what the great America has done and continue to do,  "Go back to Africa," they say...  THINKING OUT LOUD, I guess it is sad.

Tim Allen 'N-Word' Rant Condemned By Michael Eric Dyson On 'Melissa Harris-Perry'

Tim Allen took heat on Sunday for his insistence in an interview released over the weekend that "the 'n-word' is worse to me than n*****."

The comment came during an interview the "Home Improvement" star sat down for with the Tampa Bay Times last month. The conversation took place on the same day news broke about Paula Deen's admission during a deposition to using the racial epithet. Allen argued that the taboo against white people saying the word was itself a damaging practice.

Eric Deggins, the Times reporter who interviewed Allen, explained:

For him, the criticism that keeps any nonblack comic from using the word is a step backward from the days when [Richard] Pryor and [Lenny] Bruce were breaking comedy boundaries by purposefully using street language in ways middle-of-the-road comics wouldn't dare.
"If I have no intent, if I show no intent, if I clearly am not a racist," Allen argued, "then how can 'n*****' be bad coming out of my mouth?"

Allen also insisted that the an unfair double standard was at play.

I do a movie with Martin Lawrence and pretty soon they’re referring to me, 'hey, my n*****'s up.' So I’m the n***** if I’m around you guys but 7 feet away, if I said n*****, it’s not right. It’s very confusing to the European mind how that works, especially if I’ve either grown up or evolved or whatever, it literally was growing up in Colorado, with Hispanics and Anglos, that’s all I remember.
According to Deggins, the comedian did not censor his use of the word, but rather said it freely several times in "talking about how using racial [s]lurs feels from a white guy’s perspective."

That perspective doesn't mean a whole lot, argued Georgetown Professor Michael Eric Dyson on Melissa Harris-Perry's MSNBC show on Sunday. Dyson condemned Allen for trying "to reassume the appropriate privilege of whiteness, which is to dictate the terms of the debate" around the word.

Dyson continued:
Look, y’all invented the n-word. We didn’t invent it. We just co-opted it. We hijacked it. We did a carjacking on that word a few decades ago, and now you’re mad because we’ve made more sexy use of it—some denigration as well. And now you want back in? No, you can’t have back in.
[...] He says it’s confusing to me. It ain’t confusing! Here’s a general rule of thumb to follow when using the n-word for white people. Never. When you do that, then you understand you can’t do it.”

Dyson summed up his argument by reflecting that, "[a]s Chris Rock said, white people control the whole world but they feel if they can’t use the n-word, somehow their power has been removed?

"No! Grow up, allow us to determine what is in and out.

They attend black concerts, watching performers screaming the word to the roof top, from the front roll as they stand cheering them on, thinking that's right, that's exactly what you are.  They buy the CD and sing along with little regard to the history of the word and its use nor giving it a second thought why they shouldn't repeat what they just purchased.  After all it was a word that they gave to use, so if anyone has a right to use it, it's them, and so they think.  In the words of my brother Cornel West, “Our society as a whole suffers from historical amnesia," and we're just THINKING OUT LOUD this fall from E'sDrop Publishing.

We have no black leaders today and we never found our way, only the illusion that we're moving forward when in reality nothing has changed for us when the human warehouses are 85percent or more full of our young black male and females.  Our past reflection is a mirror of what we see presently and we call it progress.  Why, because we can drink from the same water Fontaine or sit at the front of the bus when many still chooses to sit at the back or we can eat at a restaurant that don't say whites only or movie theater.  None of these things are owned by blacks.  As 2pac use to ask, "Where can we go and call our own." A simple question but hard to answer, why, because we as blacks are still living another mans dream of love, peace and prosperity which we have yet to find for ourselves. Republicans in Florida appeared to make a major concession to protestors last week when House Speaker Will Weatherford (R-Wesley Chapel) ordered hearings on the state's controversial "Stand Your Ground" law.

But less thrilling to the law's critics was Weatherford's pick to chair the meetings: staunch "Stand Your Ground" fan Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fort Walton Beach).

"I don't support changing one damn comma of the 'Stand Your Ground' law," Gaetz told the Tampa Bay Times Friday. "It would be reactionary and dangerous to make Floridians less safe to pacify uninformed protesters."

Gaetz also said he thinks the hearings are a "good idea" because he wants "an opportunity to give a full-throated defense of the law."

"So much for an objective review of the law's unintended consequences," wrote the Orlando Sentinel's editorial board, who called the hearings a "farce" while House Democratic Leader Perry Thurston (D-Fort Lauderdale) took Gaetz to task.

"That type of attitude is why we have the people of the state protesting," Thurston told the Tampa Tribune. "It will only continue to fuel those who are calling for actions that Florida doesn't really need, like boycotts and everybody arming themselves. Those voices will only get louder. The people of Florida deserve adult conversation about the issue."

Gaetz's comments also prompted Dream Defenders director Phillip Agnew to challenge Gaetz to a televised debate on "Stand Your Ground," which removes a person's duty to retreat in the face of a threat. Agnew has been sleeping in the Florida capitol with other Dream Defenders in a round-the-clock protest urging Florida Governor Rick Scott to hold a special legislative session on the law, among other requests.

The hearings are "a critical first step," Agnew told the Times.

Scott, who spent three days away from his office before finally meeting with the Dream Defenders for 30 minutes, has refused to call a special session. The other two state officials empowered to call such a session, Weatherford and Gaetz's father, Senate President Don Geaetz (R-Niceville), have also refused.

“I wish the protesters weren’t there. I wish they’d leave," the elder Gaetz has said.

Weatherford's appointment of Matt Gaetz seems to mirror the efforts Scott employed when he commissioned a task force to review the law after it delayed the arrest of George Zimmerman for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. The committee was stocked with the bill's sponsor, three co-sponsors, and other members unlikely to find fault with the statute.

The panel was a "shining example of cynical political window dressing," according to South Florida Sun-Sentinel editorial cartoonist Chan Lowe, and recommended no significant changes.

As it is now part of Florida's self-defense law, the "Stand Your Ground" statute was later cited in instructions given to the Zimmerman jury; two jurors in the case have said that the wording left no option but acquittal.

Weatherford has not yet set a date for the hearings, but Gaetz's mind is made up.

"If the members of the committee support changes, they will be proposed, but nobody can count on my vote," he told the Tribune.

With 23 days to go, Spike Lee's Kickstarter project has earned $355,322 of its $1,250,000 goal as of this posting. Over 1,800 people have donated to Lee's mysterious new film (it's about "human beings who are addicted to blood," but not vampires), including director Steven Soderbergh. As Lee told NextMovie, Soderbergh dropped $10,000 into the Kickstarter coffers, meaning the two directors will attend a New York Knicks game together during the 2013-14 season. (That's the reward Lee set aside for those who donate $10,000.)

In a new posting on Lee's Kickstarter page, Soderbergh revealed why he was compelled to give.

Certain filmmakers exist outside the traditional parameters of criticism; their point of view and body of work make discussions about individual films interesting but ultimately irrelevant because each project is merely a chapter in a very long book that must (and will) be acknowledged and appreciated for its breadth, ambition, and contributions to the art of cinema. For me, Spike Lee is one of those filmmakers. He is a totally unique figure in American cinema, and he’s always gone his own way and spoken his mind (even when the commercial stakes were high), qualities which are in short supply in the film business. I know Spike’s films better than I know Spike (maybe the Knicks game with help with that), but we’re friendly enough for me to say I respect him as person as well as a filmmaker.

 

 

Spike Lee Reached His $1.25 Million Kickstarter Goal


Spike Lee is definitely making a new movie about blood-addicted humans.

The "Red Hook Summer" director successfully met his $1.25 million Kickstarter fundraising goal 25 days after he launched the campaign.

Rewards for high donors include two tickets to the world premiere of the film, autographed Nike sneakers once worn by Lee, the opportunity to be an extra in the film and a "master filmmaker class" with Lee in Brooklyn. Twenty-eight backers donated $10,00 and will go to dinner and a Knicks game with the famed director, which sounds like the best friend date in the history of fake friendship. One of these donors is Steven Soderbergh.

On July 22 he announced he would raise money to make a film he described as "a new kind of love story" about "human beings who are addicted to Blood." No, not vampires. Lee explained: "This film is a BLOOD THRILLER. It’s about people who are not Vampires but nonetheless are BLOOD ADDICTS. It’s also a Psychological Thriller. It will work on several different layers. The Audience will be scared..."

Like many other celebrities who have launched Kickstarter campaigns, Lee received quite a bit of backlash. But on the project's page, he says he's been raising funds like this for years, just without the technology. "Social media was writing letters, making phone calls, shaking hands." He said that while shooting "Malcolm X" the money ran out and he enlisted the help of friends Tracy Chapman, Bill Cosby, Prince, Oprah Winfrey and others to help him finish financing the film.

Recently, Lee announced that British actress Zaraah Abrahams will be the female lead in the new project.

Despite vampire similarities, Lee assured that this film will NOT be a remake of "Blacula."

 

As you can see the proof is right here, what we can do as a race when we come together and they hate you even more.  Instead of him taking money from the white corporations and turning to his own race it's a problem because they want have any control over who can and can't do this and that.  It's a long time coming to cut them loose any which way we can in order for us to move forward, like THINKING OUT LOUD this fall with us, one voice can echo around the world.

I Get It And I Respect It…The Harriet Tubman Video Has Been Removed.

In the whole history of Def Comedy Jam, I’ve never taken down a controversial comedian. When my buddies from the NAACP called and asked me to take down the Harriet Tubman video from the All Def Digital YouTube channel and apologize, I agreed.
I’m a very liberal person with thick skin. My first impression of the Harriet Tubman piece was that it was about what one of actors said in the video, that 162 years later, there’s still tremendous injustice, and with Harriet Tubman outwitting the slave master, I thought it was politically correct.  Silly me.  I can now understand why so many people are upset.  I have taken down the video. Lastly, I would never condone violence against women in any form, and for all of those I offended, I am sincerely sorry.

NEW YORK — Russell Simmons apologized for a parody video of Harriet Tubman in a sex tape that appeared on his All Def Digital YouTube channel.

The clip features an actress portraying Tubman having sex with her white slave master as someone films it so the abolitionist can bribe her boss. The "Harriet Tubman Sex Tape" video was posted Wednesday.

The 55-year-old Simmons, founder of Def Jam Records, wrote Thursday that he "can now understand why so many people are upset." He said he removed the video after a call from the NAACP.

Simmons added that he doesn't condone violence against women and that he's "sincerely sorry" to those offended by the clip. Though Simmons removed the video, it still lives online.

Tubman spent nearly 30 years as a slave before escaping in 1849. She led hundreds of slaves to freedom as part of the anti-slavery resistance network known as the Underground Railroad.

You think being raped by a white man back then and today are funny? The thought of that alone for all the crimes in which they have committed against our race, to being snatched from our country, separated from our love ones, humiliated, stripped of our dignity and pride, our heritage and native tongue that only we are the one left to bear the pain generations later and not one been brought to justice yet, is more than enough of a reason to hate and kill every single one of them and leave not a single child left breathing, but you think it's good for a laugh when no one black or white want to talk about what was done and how it has effected  both races mentally.  Now you see why some people don't need to think out loud.  You can't buy love, yet he tried too, nor can you buy a brain.  That's one transplant they will never be able to figure out no matter how much money he would be willing to pay because for some of us being intelligent is a blessing which it appears it wasn't one of the gifts he received.  Still THINKING OUT LOUD returning this fall, Hosted by E.
