Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome
The African American experience has produced a most resilient and magnanimous people. African Americans have managed to preserve family, retain a sense of culture, safeguard a strong spiritual integrity, and maintain their humanity in an all-too-often inhumane environment.
From the beginning of American chattel slavery in 1619 until the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865, Africans were hunted like animals, captured, sold, tortured and raped. They experienced the worst kind of physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual abuse. Given such history, Dr. Joy DeGruy Leary asks, "Isn't it likely that many slaves were severely traumatized? Furthermore, did the trauma and the effects of such horrific abuse end with the abolition of slavery?"
Emancipation was followed by one hundred more years of institutionalized subjugation through the enactment of Blacks Codes and Jim Crow laws, peonage and convict leasing, and domestic terrorism and lynching. Today the violations continue, and when combined with the crimes of the past, result in yet unmeasured injury.
Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America's Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing, answers these questions and more. Dr. Leary encourages African Americans to view their attitudes, assumptions and behaviors through the lens of history and so gain a greater understanding of the impact centuries of slavery and oppression has had on African Americans. "With this understanding we can explore the role our history has played in the evolution of our thoughts, feelings and behaviors, both negative and positive. This exploration will help lay the foundation necessary to insure our well-being and the sustained health of future generations."
THE ORIGINAL AFRICAN HERITAGE STUDY BIBLE
MATTHEW 27:
When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the
people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: 2 And when they had
bound him, they led him away; and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the
governor. 11 And Jesus stood before the
governor: and the governor asked him,
saying, Art thou the king of the Jews?
And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.
12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered
nothing.
13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how
many things they witness against thee?
14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor
marvelled greatly. 15 Now at that feast
the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they
would. 16 And they had then a notable
prisoner, called Barabbas. 17 Therefore
when they were gather together, Pilate said unto them, Whom shall ye that I
release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus
which is called Christ? 18 For he knew
out of envy they had delivered him. 19
When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, have
thou nothing to do with that just man: for
I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. 20 But the
chief priest and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask for
Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. 21 The
governor answered and said unto them, whether of the twain will ye that I
release unto you? They said,
Barabbas. 22 Pilate saith unto them,
what shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be
crucified. 24 When Pilate saw that he
could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and
washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of
this just person: see ye to it. 25 Then
answered all the people, and said, His blood be on use,
and our children. 26 Then release
he Barabbas unto them: and when he scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be
crucified.
He never said that he was the king of the Jews nor was
he ever mention as being one. If he were their king, why didn’t they put up
fight for him? “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name
JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and
shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being
interpreted is, God with us”.
If Jesus was of the Holy Ghost, once again I ask, how
would that make him a Jew? When the
Angel said he will save his people he/she were talking about his creation
meaning every living soul. He didn’t
come for just the Jews sake, but for those that had changed their sinful ways
because of him and chose to following his path to ever lasting life. Now we have people fighting so call holy
wars, but no one lifted a finger in his behalf.
Hate: They
hated this man for his color more than his preaching or his healing, so much so
that they would curse their unborn child and the generation to come; that which
you and I have had to deal with today.
If you ever wanted to know why we are hated when we have done nothing to
our oppressors, this is where it started.
